Every great brand has a story, and for 1019 Relish and Sauce, it’s one rooted in family, heritage, and the bold love of flavour. Born in the quiet stillness of the pandemic and inspired by the fiery habaneros of Ghana, 1019 Relish and Sauce has grown into a 5 pepper blend sauce inspired by Ghanaian and South African flavours. Carrying the spirit of Tlhabane, the home where its founder grew up, learned the magic of food, and found comfort in the kitchen, each bottle is a taste of memory, culture, and connection.

Inspired by global travel and African culinary heritage, 1019
was born from a passion for bold peppers and shared meals. I loved the flavours that I was exposed to in Ghana and kept thinking to myself if I could only find a way to come up with something that captures the fruitiness of the habanero pepper like so many of the Ghanaian dishes do, then I would find a way for people to fall in love with my sauce. This is how the sauce came about, through a merriment of peppers.  I was raised in a home where we loved to cook and to host family and friends and to honour my grandparents, I named the sauces, 1019 Relish and Sauce after 1019 Monareng Street in Tlhabane. The brand celebrates family, flavour and authenticity— values that resonate across borders.

Growing up, food wasn’t just fuel. It was theatre, tradition, and togetherness. Our Sunday lunches stretched late into the afternoon because each dish was crafted with care. Everyone in my family has their speciality dish: my mother with her prawn curry, my father with his beef goulash, my grandfather’s delectable meatballs, and my grandmother’s meaty bones soup.  Meals in our home were never small. My fondest memory is our front yard being filled with people enjoying an array of special dishes.  That spirit of hosting, sharing, and celebrating through flavour is what lives on in 1019 Relish and Sauce.

We don’t compromise on taste, and that’s exactly what our products reflect, bold flavour and versatility, aligned with our culture as South Africans.  My dream is to take these flavours to the rest of the word and for the 1019 range to become a household staple that brings convenience to the working parents who are too tired to prepare an elaborate meal on work nights, the bachelor who wants to spice up takeaways, the  adventurous foodie who wants to cook up a storm and impress guests or restaurant looking to create a signature dish using our products.
